please suggest a list of relevant websites to be around "bookmarks" in "walk in internet.

we are looking for 10 links, two of which might be Eldy.eu and Google.com or another search engine.

Make these links to be relevant, various (e.g. sport, fun, health etc), and local.
When we have 10, we plan a multi page (like in the italian version) portal.

    Actual list:
    1 eldy.eu
    2 BBC
    3 weather.com
    4 times
    5 cnn
    6 usatoday
    7 nytimes
    8 sky
    9 search google
    10 simplicity computer

ps keep in mind we can change this from your suggestions also very often, if required

Have heard rumors that Fox network sites (Times etc) are soon to start charging for news access. Would a good idea to remove affiliated sites for that reason..
Obviously remove USA sites too – a good link (and of interest) would be Age Concern/Help the Aged. Possibly a self-branded search page – a la Google but Eldy centric.

Obviously SAGA would be of interest – could be a source of revenue. Sites should be useful but try to include those offering services/advice for free – unless they are supporting the project.
I am in discussion with a few groups to create a portal with access to localized services (i.e. click on the map and find your local council etc) – this would help cut down on clutter.
    Any other ideas?

as for commercial websites, please try to avoid – put website where information is free.

we managed keeping Eldy clean from any ads, so let us try to keep it natural – of course in a website there will be some banners, but don't choose very commercial website
    SAGA: will check.

i think map would be very useful, if we manage to provide it easily!

    let's try with a list of 10!
    number 1 ….

Saga a company, only suggested if there was going to be a need for some commercial support
I agree that sites should be'free', only gave suggestions if other needs – note my comment about Rupert Murdoch's news sites.

    1 Eldy (obviously)
2 Google/Bing (still think an 'Eldy' search page would be good
    3 Age Concern (www.ageconcern.org.uk)
    4 Help the aged (www.helptheaged.org.uk)
5 BBC – I will write a guide to show how to localize this for users
    6 NHS Direct (www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk)
7 Portal – will moot this in detail later
8 Friends Reunited? – not sure but may be of interest.

couple of other sites (.orgs) I found:
    http://www.housingcare.org/
    http://www.counselandcare.org.uk

As far as the portal is concerned, I have spoken to a few organizations who concur (maybe I can get this built in-house) – if there were a site which was basically a map it could have links to various and myriad sites around the country and beyond. Help, health and entertainment would be the themes – with information on topics as diverse as computing (obv), exercise, healthy eating, medical, ex-service organizations and genealogy (of big interest). Click on the map to find more pertinent local information – local council, MP details (?), Doctors, local events and clubs. This could become quite a monster but as an idea I think it has legs…

    9 digitalunite.com

national social inculsion (IT) – Silver Surfers etc

  • Avatar Image Matt Stone said 2 years, 6 months ago:

I would say wikipedia, but perhaps the interface is too complex. //Unrelated: Maybe a "find out about…" search bar as a future add-on that searches Wikipedia and displays a page if found?

    NEW SUGGESTIONS:
The following websites are designed for senior users of the web:

SAGA, the UK consumer organisation for the over 50s
    http://home.saga.co.uk/

SeniorNet aims to provide older adults education for, and access to, computer technologies to enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom.
    http://www.seniornet.org/

Help the aged provide lots of Health advice:
    http://www.helptheaged.org.uk/en-gb/AdviceSupport/HealthAdvice/

U3A groups around the United Kingdom are members of the Third Age Trust (The third age trust is a UK trust, the U3A is australian based). Its main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those no longer in full time gainful employment.

Have a (hopefully) comprehensive list to follow.
Can't find suitable games site as yet. Enrico was present when talking to a user online, thoght we could maybe have Sudoku puzzles etc on local eldy pages?
    Anyway

    1 Eldy (obviously) – http://www.eldy.eu
2 Google/Bing (still think an 'Eldy' search page would be good for the future)
    3 Age Concern – http://www.ageconcern.org.uk
    4 Help the aged – http://www.helptheaged.org.uk
5 BBC – http://www.bbc.co.uk – I will write a guide to show how to localize this for users
    6 NHS Direct – http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk
    7 Check this out – http://hellsgeriatrics.co.uk/
    8 http://www.u3a.org.uk
    9 http://www.digitalunite
    10 http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk
    11 http://www.counselandcare.org.uk

Problem with some services is that the UK is highly regionalised these days – hence my idea about a UK portal – mentionad a few items above
