    LiveCD/USB (8 posts)

    Am hoping this will catch the eye of Thom,

    Gathering all information about LiveCD efforts so far:

    MINT vs PUPPY
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Creating a Mint LiveCD is possible, however on my tests there is a long load time (>5mins) to get into any usable state.
    I much prefer Thom LaCostas method of using puppy due to it's tiny footprint. It is also the smallest footprint linux capable of running a java engine.
    Puppy is also cabable of storing files on the live cd, AFTER IT'S BEEN BURNT. This is the equivalent of giving users a 500-odd MB hard drive. I like this feature alot as it means each CD can be customised by an admin (username to eldy, autostart etc) and mailed/handed out to the end user afterwards.
    Combine this with the fact he also has a working USB version, I am suggesting all efforts are concentrated on Puppy, NOT Mint. My work on a Mint LiveCD has now completely ceased.
    Suggest way forward from here is to create a Live-CD .iso that completely hides the underlying system, boots straight into Eldy, shuts down when Eldy is quit.
    Thom, I note you are well integrated into the puppy community, those guys could be of a real help creating this. Could you get a topic going on the to-do below:
    MY PUPPY LINUX SUGGESTED TO-DO
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    1) Strip unnecessary features out of Puppy to make the load times faster.
    2) Include Eldy branding (see below)
    3) Find a way to detect when Eldy terminates & auto-shutdown system (with a break-out if admin work is required).
    4) find a way to configure the wireless network if no network connection has been established (automatically bring the network configuration to the foreground) – I have some theories on how to make this work and will do some testing.
    5) Integrate a Skype installation

    ELDY BRANDING
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    It is possible to change the load screens of Puppy to Eldy versions (turning the CD into an "Eldy Live CD"
    Thom, I will provide you with some boot screens and other Eldy logos, and some integration instructions if you require them.
    Matt:
    1) Strip unnecessary features out of Puppy to make the load times faster.
    Note: I will ask in the Puppy Community for the most lean version.
    It is very difficult to remove things from Puppy unless one has the time and skills to use the development tools(I have neither of those). One Puppy is configured, it loads much faster than Windows, and can run on older technology.
    4) find a way to configure the wireless network if no network connection has been established
    Note: Various people within the Puppy community have attempted number 4….the general consensus is that establishing a connection to the internet is fairly simple.
    It's beginning to look like we need a way to start Puppy, configure the internet connection, and Skype…and when finished, setup the autostart. I believe a bash script can take care of those functions.
    Thats good… I note you're quite integrated into the Puppy community (is that where you heard of Eldy?).
    Could you give me a quick run-down on the history of what has been achieved so far with an Eldy-Puppy solution?
    RE: Lean Puppy – I am hoping the puppy community will be able to help with this. The quicker the better! I will look at the dev tools and see if I can reduce the size. We want the footprint at minimum, and the load time at the most optimum (even if this means Load Eldy first and then load other apps afterwards. As long as the Square is shown in as little time as possible).
    We don't require any of the word processing etc that is bundled with Puppy, we may even be able to do away with the Window Manager.
    RE: bash Script – My own preference would be to see an iso with all that already installed, that can be downloaded as an "Eldy-Live" version. No in-depth setup or maintenance required by the end user, just registering to Eldy.
    Cheers,
    Matt
    a one-time run bash script would be OK actually… to configure network settings etc at the same time. Can probably knock up a setup window that uses Eldy's interface looks.
    I heard of Eldy in the Puppy Forum
    Not sure how many people are using my configuration for Eldy and Puppy. Someone made a version, but it has even more bling than the standard Puppy.
    I think you're way too concerned about loading time…Puppy, even the bloated versions load quite quickly….and seniors using Windows will be amazed at how quickly Puppy boots up. If Puppy is hidden by Eldy….why go through all the trouble of surgery? I can tell you that people who have slimmed down puppy get shot in the foot with dependency issues.
    As far as producing a Puppy-Eldy….if the setup script is done, I think I could produce a Live-CD iso and bootable USB in under an hour….
    So, Eldy needs to be fixed, improved, finalized and released.
    Sure Thom, you're our resident Puppy expert! I have to say I am impressed by Puppy load times.
    I can write setup scripts, will post one here in the near future.
    I agree too that we should wait for 2.2 official release before distributing an .iso
    One of the folks that produced a very nice version of Puppy has agreed to roll out a bare bones version of the latest Puppy. As soon as he gets it to me, I'll make it available for download.
    Very interested in this LiveCD project, especially if the Eldy build includes IMAP.
    Is it still underway somehow?
    Thank you.
