Am hoping this will catch the eye of Thom,
Gathering all information about LiveCD efforts so far:
MINT vs PUPPY
~~~~~~~~~~~
Creating a Mint LiveCD is possible, however on my tests there is a long load time (>5mins) to get into any usable state.
I much prefer Thom LaCostas method of using puppy due to it's tiny footprint. It is also the smallest footprint linux capable of running a java engine.
Puppy is also cabable of storing files on the live cd, AFTER IT'S BEEN BURNT. This is the equivalent of giving users a 500-odd MB hard drive. I like this feature alot as it means each CD can be customised by an admin (username to eldy, autostart etc) and mailed/handed out to the end user afterwards.
Combine this with the fact he also has a working USB version, I am suggesting all efforts are concentrated on Puppy, NOT Mint. My work on a Mint LiveCD has now completely ceased.
Suggest way forward from here is to create a Live-CD .iso that completely hides the underlying system, boots straight into Eldy, shuts down when Eldy is quit.
Thom, I note you are well integrated into the puppy community, those guys could be of a real help creating this. Could you get a topic going on the to-do below:
MY PUPPY LINUX SUGGESTED TO-DO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Strip unnecessary features out of Puppy to make the load times faster.
2) Include Eldy branding (see below)
3) Find a way to detect when Eldy terminates & auto-shutdown system (with a break-out if admin work is required).
4) find a way to configure the wireless network if no network connection has been established (automatically bring the network configuration to the foreground) – I have some theories on how to make this work and will do some testing.
5) Integrate a Skype installation
ELDY BRANDING
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is possible to change the load screens of Puppy to Eldy versions (turning the CD into an "Eldy Live CD"
Thom, I will provide you with some boot screens and other Eldy logos, and some integration instructions if you require them.
